Maddinson is slotted to open while South Africa had named their XI a day before the Test

Nic Maddinson has returned to Test cricket after a ten-year absence, opening the batting for Australia against South Africa in Durban. Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first in sunny conditions at Kingsmead. Maddinson partners Travis Head at the top of the order, while Matt Renshaw slots in at No. 5.
Maddinson previously played three Tests in 2016 and recently completed treatment for testicular cancer. Australia entered the contest without Cameron Green due to an abdominal strain, while Cooper Connolly was sidelined with a head cold. South Africa brought back fast bowler Anrich Nortje to their bowling lineup alongside spinner Simon Harmer.
