Kevin Pietersen has joined the England white-ball coaching setup as a mentor ahead of the 50-over World Cup in South Africa. Former bowler Steven Finn believes the decision will provide necessary challenge to help the team refine its standards.
Former England fast bowler Steven Finn believes Kevin Pietersen will bring a direct and unfiltered approach to England’s 50-over dressing room. Pietersen’s appointment as a mentor comes ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, following an invitation from head coach Brendon McCullum to challenge existing methods.
Writing for BBC Sport, Finn recalled sharing dressing rooms with Pietersen early in his career. He noted that Pietersen consistently demanded high intensity during net sessions, deliberately creating competitive situations to prepare players for international cricket. Pietersen would regularly tell bowlers in practice that he planned to attack them without getting out, forcing them to bowl quicker and sharper.
During the 2013-14 Ashes tour in Perth, while Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson was dominating the series, Pietersen stepped in to assist lower-order batters against short-pitched bowling. Finn remembered Pietersen approaching him in the dressing room and saying “let’s go practice facing the short ball in the nets” to help him refine an evasion technique.
Finn also highlighted Pietersen’s dedication behind closed doors. Ahead of a Test match in Sri Lanka in 2012, Pietersen spent hours facing local left-arm spinners in Colombo to fix a technical issue before scoring a decisive 151 against Rangana Herath.
McCullum wants Pietersen to question routines and maintain standards within the squad.
The 50-over format now closely matches the tempo of modern Test cricket, requiring technical patience alongside rapid scoring. Pietersen’s background in foundational technique and white-ball innovation provides valuable experience for modern players. His presence over the next 14 months aims to prevent England from falling into an echo chamber as they prepare for tournament conditions in South Africa.
