One of the Sheffield Shield’s most prolific recent batters has continued his form surge - but he won’t be able to turn it into an Australian Test call-up anytime soon.
New South Wales batter Ollie Davies made Sheffield Shield history on Friday by smashing the competition's fastest recorded double century. The 25-year-old reached 200 off just 186 deliveries against Tasmania on Day 2 at Cricket Central, eventually falling for 253 off 225 balls. His explosive innings, featuring 38 boundaries and four sixes, helped NSW reach 6-441 at stumps to establish a commanding 196-run lead over the visitors.
Davies became the first NSW player to score a Shield double century since 2017, supported by Jack Edwards' unbeaten 109 and Kurtis Patterson's 54. Elsewhere in Shield action, South Australia built a strong position against Victoria behind maiden centuries from Ben Manenti and debutant Noah McFadyen, while Queensland reached 6-258 against Western Australia on a rain-interrupted opening day in Perth.
