The Story in 60 Seconds

The BBC is facing a challenge from commercial broadcaster talkSPORT over the audio rights to Formula One and home England cricket coverage. The move poses a threat to long-running staples of the BBC's sports coverage, including the iconic show Test Match Special, which has aired on the corporation since 1957, as well as Formula One coverage held exclusively since 1994.

talkSPORT head Liam Fisher confirmed the broadcaster is actively exploring both properties as part of a strategy to diversify beyond football. With the BBC seeking £500 million in cost cuts, Fisher suggested that having multiple audio broadcasters could maximize audiences and revenue, though the England and Wales Cricket Board may consider shared rights from 2029.
