F1’s Last Race in Africa: What Happened, and Why the Series Hasn’t Returned
Key Things to Know
  • Formula One has signed a ten-year agreement to hold the African Grand Prix in Rwanda from the early 2030s.
  • The continent has not hosted a Grand Prix since Alain Prost won at Kyalami in March 1993.
  • Kyalami failed to return due to lacking FIA Grade 1 status, costly upgrades, and missing financial guarantees.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Formula One has not raced in Africa since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, which was won by Alain Prost for Williams ahead of Ayrton Senna. The continent's extended absence from the racing calendar was largely caused by Kyalami lacking modern FIA Grade 1 certification alongside steep upgrade costs and failed financial guarantees.

Africa is now slated to return to the Formula One schedule after series organizers signed a ten-year agreement to host an African Grand Prix in Rwanda starting in the early 2030s. The planned purpose-built venue in Bugesera is being designed by Wurz Design and Tilke GmbH to meet top FIA standards.
