FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem wants to bring back V8 engines and their iconic engine sound a year earlier than scheduled to Formula 1, but he needs manufacturer backing to fast-track the 2030 shift.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has stated that official updates regarding an agreement to bring V8 engines back to Formula 1 could arrive within a few months. While initial speculation pointed to a 2031 transition, the governing body is aiming to fast-track the shift to 2030. To implement the plan ahead of 2031, the FIA must secure support from at least four of the sport's six power unit manufacturers.
The push for simpler, lighter, and more affordable engines follows ongoing criticism of the current hybrid power unit regulations from drivers and fans. Ben Sulayem emphasized that simplifying engine architecture will reduce research, development, and production costs while restoring the traditional engine noise that has been absent since the conclusion of the V8 era in 2013.
