Dr. Helmut Marko has defended Formula 1's decision to add Rwanda to the racing calendar under a new 10-year African Grand Prix deal. Speaking to German broadcaster RTL, Marko argued that Rwanda has a legitimate place in the sport as an emerging country, noting that as a world championship, Formula 1 should include all regions of the globe.
The agreement has faced intense backlash from human rights groups and neighboring nations. Amnesty International labeled the deal a "sportswashing prize," while Human Rights Watch and the Democratic Republic of Congo cited political repression and alleged Rwandan involvement in regional conflicts. In response to sportswashing concerns, Marko claimed different political laws apply in emerging countries.
