Valtteri Bottas has clarified F1 drivers have “no problem” paying taxes when they race in Italy, expanding on comments he made at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Valtteri Bottas has clarified his remarks regarding Italian tax laws, stating that Formula 1 drivers have no issue paying taxes when competing in Italy. Bottas stated his previous comments claiming no driver wanted to race there were blown out of proportion, clarifying that the frustration stemmed from authorities unexpectedly demanding back taxes covering seven or eight years without prior notice.
Foreign athletes competing in Italy are classified as freelancers and required to pay tax on earnings made in the country. The discussion arose as Imola is considered a possible alternative venue for the 2026 season finale. Other drivers also commented on the matter, with Max Verstappen dismissing any controversy and Haas driver Ollie Bearman joking about the situation.
