United States vice-captain Fred Couples originally orchestrated the successful playing partnership between Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Speaking ahead of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club, Schauffele credited Couples with noticing their chemistry during a card game on a flight to the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia.

Since pairing up, Schauffele and Cantlay have accumulated an 8-7 overall match record across the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. They hold a 7-4 record in alternate shot foursomes, including a 5-and-3 victory over Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter at Whistling Straits in 2021.
