The Athletics may hire a general manager to serve as the number two front office executive under newly hired president of baseball operations Taylor Smith. Owner John Fisher suggested the possibility during Smith's introductory press conference on Monday, pointing toward a two-tiered executive structure that has become increasingly common across Major League Baseball.
The team previously used a similar model when Billy Beane and David Forst led the front office, prior to Beane stepping into an advisory role after the 2022 season. Despite the front office changes, manager Mark Kotsay remains firmly in place under a contract running through at least 2028, with Smith expressing enthusiasm about partnering with the veteran skipper.
