The Athletics have officially hired Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith as their new President of Baseball Operations. The move follows weeks of speculation after the organization interviewed Smith and shifted focus to him following Sam Fuld's rejection of the position.
Smith previously worked in research and development with the Tampa Bay Rays before serving under Craig Breslow in Boston overseeing analytics. Ahead of his first offseason leading the Athletics, Smith faces decisions regarding front-office staffing, manager Mark Kotsay's future, and rebuilding the team's pitching staff.
