A long offseason for the Red Sox began with a contractual formality becoming official late last week as Aroldis Chapman passed an end-of-year physical to secure a return to the club.

Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman will return for the 2027 season after passing his end-of-season physical, officially triggering his vesting option. The 38-year-old reliever fulfilled the contractual conditions by pitching 51 2/3 innings in 2026, surpassing the 40-inning threshold required alongside maintaining clean health. Chapman is set to earn between $13 million and $14 million in 2027, with the final total depending on his finish in relief pitcher award voting.
Chapman produced a standout 2026 campaign, recording a 1.92 ERA, 71 strikeouts, and 35 saves in 37 opportunities across 53 appearances. He also achieved his 400th career save on September 6 against the Baltimore Orioles, becoming only the ninth pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach the milestone.
