The Cubs will start LHP Matthew Boyd in Game 1 opposite Padres righty Michael King. Alex Bregman's availability on defense, meanwhile, remains up in the air.

The Chicago Cubs have named left-hander Matthew Boyd as their starting pitcher for Game 1 of the wild-card series against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. San Diego will start right-hander Michael King in the opener. Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that pitcher Kevin Gausman will appear during the series despite dealing with left shoulder soreness, but plans for subsequent games remain undecided.
Third baseman Alex Bregman continues to play through facial fractures suffered on Sept. 20 after being hit by a foul ball. While Bregman took ground balls at Petco Park on Monday, Counsell has not determined whether he will play third base or serve as the designated hitter. If Bregman is the DH, Pedro Ramirez or Matt Shaw will start at third base.
