Starters and relievers? Not on the South Side. The unorthodox strategy that has carried the White Sox this far now faces its biggest test yet.

The Chicago White Sox are utilizing an unorthodox "pitching chaos" strategy during the 2026 MLB playoffs, heavily relying on their bullpen rather than traditional starting pitchers. After sweeping the Houston Astros, Chicago faces a deciding Game 5 against the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS. Manager Will Venable and general manager Chris Getz have guided the staff to historical bullpen usage, becoming the first team to win four straight postseason games with starters pitching four or fewer innings.
Key pitchers including Sean Burke, Grant Taylor, and starter-turned-reliever Anthony Kay have adapted to fluid, multi-inning relief roles. Chicago's starters have thrown only 12⅔ postseason innings compared to 41⅓ innings from relievers. Following a 9-5 loss in Game 4 where relievers surrendered all nine runs, the White Sox aim to rely on the collective staff's remaining stamina to secure an American League Championship Series berth.
