In the Cubs' search for pitching, Kona Takahashi should be on their radar as a lower-cost groundball demon overshadowed by other NPB stars coming to MLB.

Cubbies Crib writer Ryan O'Rourke suggests the Chicago Cubs should pursue Japanese right-hander Kona Takahashi as an affordable rotation option this offseason. Takahashi, who is entering his age-30 season and eligible for full international free agency, previously declined MLB offers to remain with the Seibu Lions. The Cubs face multiple potential rotation vacancies with Seiya Suzuki and Shota Imanaga unlikely to return.
In 2026, Takahashi posted a 2.54 ERA across 138 1/3 innings, leaning on an increased 58.5% ground-ball rate after tweaking his pitch mix. While acknowledging Takahashi is not a front-of-the-rotation ace, O'Rourke argues his ability to limit home runs and generate grounders would complement Chicago's infield defense on a low-cost contract.
