Cubs manager Craig Counsell revealed that Bregman sent him an enthusiastic text message before the game asserting he felt ready for postseason play.

The breakout game followed a brief absence for Bregman, who suffered facial fractures after being struck by a foul ball on September 20. Although he went hitless during his initial return on Friday, his rapid recovery allowed him to avoid surgery and regain form just before the playoffs.
