The Cincinnati Reds got news on Saturday that they’d be free of an otherwise $10 million obligation for the 2027 season. Of course, they also got news that they’re going to need to go find a closer for the 2027…

Relief pitcher Emilio Pagán has officially declined his option to return to the Cincinnati Reds for the 2027 season, entering free agency. The move frees the club from a $10 million obligation but leaves Cincinnati searching for a closer for next season. Francys Romero initially reported the decision, which allows Pagán to explore the open market for a multi-year deal as he approaches his age-36 campaign.
Pagán served as Cincinnati's primary closer for the past two seasons, collecting 58 saves and a 3.44 ERA over three years. His departure adds to bullpen departures that include Brock Burke reaching free agency and Pierce Johnson having his mutual option declined, reducing the Reds' 40-man roster to 35 players.
