Former Cleveland Indians pitcher Sam "Sudden Sam" McDowell died on Monday at his home in The Villages, Florida, at age 84. The six-time All-Star left-hander pitched 11 seasons for Cleveland from 1961 through 1971, leading the American League in strikeouts five times and compiling 2,159 strikeouts with the franchise, the second-most in team history.
McDowell later played for the San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Pirates before retiring in 1975. Following his baseball career and recovery from alcoholism, he served as a counselor for athletes facing addiction and depression, a journey that helped inspire the character Sam Malone on "Cheers."
