The Cleveland Guardians were able to pull out a win in Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night. They also carry a long-term payroll obligation to José Ramírez that stretches well…
The Cleveland Guardians are tied to star third baseman José Ramírez through 2051 due to a heavily deferred contract structure. Ramírez's seven-year, $175 million deal includes $70 million in deferred compensation, keeping him on the payroll until he turns 58 years old.
Under the terms, $10 million is deferred from each season's $25 million salary, paid out in equal installments every December after a 10-year delay. The arrangement provided Cleveland immediate financial flexibility while securing their franchise cornerstone with a full no-trade clause through age 39.
