The Arizona Diamondbacks have outrighted first baseman Pavin Smith off their 40-man roster, bringing the team's roster count down to 33 players. The transaction was revealed via the MiLB.com transaction tracker. Smith, a former number seven overall draft pick, is expected to elect free agency shortly instead of accepting an outright assignment.
MLB Trade Rumors contributor Matt Swartz had projected Smith to earn a $2.5 million arbitration salary, making the move effectively an early non-tender. Smith batted just .141 in his initial 89 plate appearances this season, despite a strong finish in September. The Diamondbacks will now look for alternative options at first base and designated hitter.
