Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros: Should he stay or should he go this offseason?

Scott Barzilla argues that deciding whether to extend or trade shortstop Jeremy Peña represents the Houston Astros' biggest decision of the offseason. Comparing Peña's five-year production to other prominent major league shortstops, the writer notes that Peña produces roughly average numbers for the top tier. Consequently, Barzilla suggests agent Scott Boras could reasonably command an average annual salary around $30 million on the open market.
According to the analysis, owner Jim Crane and the upcoming general manager must weigh committing an estimated eight-year, $240 million contract against trading Peña. Barzilla notes that trading the shortstop could yield multiple useful players while freeing up significant salary from Peña's projected 2027 arbitration figure.
