Key Things to Know
  • Bradford Lee argues that former Royals pitcher Kevin Appier remains severely overlooked on a national level.

The Story in 60 Seconds

Royals Review writer Bradford Lee argues that former Kansas City Royals pitcher Kevin Appier is one of the most overlooked players in franchise and baseball history. Selected ninth overall in the 1987 draft, Appier spent 13 seasons with the Royals, posting a 9.3 bWAR season in 1993 and earning Royals Hall of Fame induction in 2011.

Lee contends that Appier was routinely overlooked by award voters, finishing third in both the 1990 Rookie of the Year and 1993 AL Cy Young races. Despite playing on weak teams and earning just one All-Star selection, Appier finished his 16-year career with 169 wins, 1,994 strikeouts, and a 2002 World Series championship with the Anaheim Angels.
