Key Things to Know
  • MLB proposed shortening the regular season to 154 games starting in 2029 in its latest CBA offer.
  • The Division Series would expand to a best-of-seven format under the league's new postseason plan.
  • Top seeds would be permitted to select their playoff opponents in the Wild Card and Division Series rounds.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Major League Baseball has submitted a new collective bargaining agreement proposal to the MLBPA that includes reducing the regular season from 162 to 154 games beginning in 2029. The proposal also outlines significant postseason changes, such as expanding the Division Series to a best-of-seven format and allowing top seeds to choose their playoff opponents in both the Wild Card and Division Series rounds.

The proposed schedule change would include four split doubleheaders per team and introduce a weekly national Monday broadcast. However, the league tied these proposals to the implementation of a salary cap, which the MLBPA immediately criticized as an unacceptable, anti-player demand.
