MLB's latest proposal would shorten the regular season to 154 games and allow top playoff seeds to pick opponents.

Major League Baseball proposed a new framework to the players union on Thursday that would reduce the regular season from 162 games to 154 games starting in 2029. Under the proposal, teams would play four split-doubleheaders during the season, allowing the regular season to conclude approximately one week earlier than normal.
The proposal also includes plans for an expanded postseason format featuring a longer Division Series and options for teams to pick playoff opponents. However, reports indicate the league is seeking significant economic concessions from players in exchange, including discussions around a potential salary cap.
