Impending free agent Ty France would go a long way toward solving the Mets' first base problems, but he's unlikely to leave a starring role in San Diego just to be part of a platoon.

Brandon Glick of Rising Apple argues that free agent first baseman Ty France would likely only sign with the New York Mets if offered an everyday starting role over Jared Young. Following a 2026 season where Mets first basemen posted a league-worst -1.4 fWAR, France has emerged as a potential target after a strong season with the San Diego Padres.
While France hit 21 home runs with a 141 wRC+ in 2026, Glick writes that he would be unlikely to accept a platoon role in New York. Because Young struggled significantly against left-handed pitching, the writer suggests the Mets should instead pursue true platoon options in free agency, such as Paul Goldschmidt.
