This was before The Babe…

Paul Semendinger explores how the New York Highlanders briefly discussed trading outfielder Frank Delahanty to the Detroit Tigers for Ty Cobb prior to the 1907 season. Both clubs were dealing with disgruntled young players at the time, but Detroit ultimately decided to pass on the proposed swap.
Delahanty was eventually traded to the Cleveland Naps for pitcher Earl Moore, while Cobb remained in Detroit and became one of baseball's greatest hitters. Semendinger notes how this missed transaction could have altered the franchise's trajectory long before Babe Ruth arrived in 1920.
