The Story in 60 Seconds

Pinstripe Alley celebrated the birthday of former New York Yankees third baseman Andy Carey, who played for the team from 1952 to 1960. Carey initially signed with New York for a then-record $60,000 bonus after St. Mary's College dropped its baseball program. During his tenure under manager Casey Stengel, he established himself as the everyday third baseman and contributed to World Series-winning teams in 1956 and 1958.

Over his Yankees career, Carey batted .266 with a 100 OPS+ before losing his starting role to Clete Boyer. He was traded to the Kansas City Athletics in May 1960 for Bob Cerv and finished his major league career in 1962 following stints with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. Carey passed away in 2011 at the age of 80.
