Third base has been the New York Yankees’ most persistent problem for years, and 2026 did not solve it.

Former New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain has urged the team to target Japanese third baseman Teruaki Sato this offseason. The 27-year-old won the Central League Triple Crown with the Hanshin Tigers and was announced for posting on Oct. 19. Chamberlain argued on Yankees Pod that New York must address their ongoing vacancy at third base following an American League Division Series elimination against the Tampa Bay Rays.
While the Yankees have scouted Sato, beat reporter Chris Kirschner questioned the roster fit due to defensive concerns. Scouts suggest Sato may need to transition to first base or the outfield, where New York already features Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, Spencer Jones, and Ben Rice. Sato's 45-day posting window is expected to attract interest from multiple clubs including the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies.
