The Story in 60 Seconds

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Don Mattingly to a two-year contract to serve as their permanent manager for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. Mattingly originally took over as interim manager following the dismissal of Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start, guiding the Phillies to a 79-55 finish and an NL Wild Card Series appearance. With Preston Mattingly serving as general manager, the pair forms Major League Baseball's first official father-son manager-GM combination.

Alongside Mattingly's appointment, the Phillies initiated a coaching staff overhaul by parting ways with hitting coach Kevin Long and infield coach Bobby Dickerson. Team president Dave Dombrowski reportedly offered the managerial role to Alex Cora before finalizing the agreement with Mattingly. Dickerson's departure comes as Philadelphia shifts toward a data-oriented defensive approach following a season where they allowed a .274 batting average on ground balls.
