Pirates fans have spent years begging Bob Nutting to spend more money, and MLB's looming labor battle may force him to do exactly that.

Emma Lingan writes for Rum Bunter that Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting belongs to an MLB ownership group pursuing an economic overhaul that could force his club to significantly increase spending. MLB owners have proposed a salary cap-and-floor system featuring a $171.2 million payroll floor for 2027, an amount well above Pittsburgh's 2026 Opening Day payroll of roughly $102 million. MLB identified the Pirates as one of 12 teams that would need to raise payroll under the proposal.
Lingan argues that while Nutting has kept his personal stance private, a potential lockout over this proposal creates an ironic scenario. If implemented, the system would eliminate long-standing small-market financial excuses and require the Pirates to spend tens of millions more.
