Pirates may learn replacing Brandon Lowe is the more expensive option

The Pittsburgh Pirates face an offseason decision regarding second baseman Brandon Lowe, who is approaching free agency. Lowe provided middle-of-the-order power for the Pirates' offense after being acquired by the team, hitting nearly 30 home runs. MLB.com recently ranked Lowe sixth among upcoming free agents.

While internal candidate Nick Gonzales hit .305 with a .760 OPS, he contributed only six home runs. Replacing Lowe's offensive output through external signings or trades across other positions could prove costly in both financial terms and prospect capital.
