Veteran righty Jose Urquidy cleared waivers and elected free agency on Wednesday. He didn’t have to wait long to find a new gig. Urquidy is headed back to the Pirates on a minor league deal, per his MLB.com transactions tracker.
Right-handed pitcher Jose Urquidy has signed a minor league contract to return to the Pittsburgh Pirates after electing free agency earlier in the week. Urquidy initially joined Pittsburgh last offseason on a $1.5 million deal before being designated for assignment in late July. He subsequently spent brief stints with the Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies before returning to the Pirates organization.
The 31-year-old registered a 4.95 ERA across 36 1/3 major league innings this season while totaling 132 combined innings between the majors and minors. Urquidy adjusted his pitch repertoire in 2026 by increasing his sinker usage to 20.9%, which contributed to a career-high 39.2% groundball rate. He is expected to provide starting pitching depth for Pittsburgh next season.
