There’s a chance of Michael King not returning to the Padres in 2027 after declining his player option on Thursday.

Following the conclusion of the 2026 World Series, pitcher Michael King declined his player option with the San Diego Padres to enter free agency. King completed a strong 2026 campaign after signing a three-year, $75 million deal with opt-outs, recording a 3.21 ERA, 4.6 bWAR, and 18 quality starts across 185 innings pitched as San Diego's rotation ace.
Writer Fabian Garcia evaluates King's mechanical adjustments alongside changes in his pitch metrics, arguing that the Padres should retain him on an average annual value near $35 million. Garcia highlights that despite King allowing 20 home runs and experiencing shifts in his sinker and changeup effectiveness, the veteran starter proved crucial to San Diego's rotation.
