The Story in 60 Seconds

Gaslamp Ball evaluated San Diego Padres catcher Ethan Salas for his performance across the 2026 season, giving him an overall grade of B+. Salas returned from an injury-shortened 2025 to bat .296 across 96 minor-league games before earning a September call-up to the majors. He became the youngest catcher to make his MLB debut since Iván Rodríguez did so in 1991.

After starting his major-league career 0-for-14, Salas hit his first career hit on September 13 against the San Francisco Giants. He finished the season strong, batting .400 across his next 10 games and becoming the youngest catcher in MLB history to record a multi-homer game. The writer notes Salas will likely compete for playing time with Luis Campusano and Freddy Fermin in 2027.
