Julio Rodríguez needs to get better on defense. Jason Kanzler could have the magic touch the Mariners need.

Zachary Rymer of Sodo Mojo argues that new Seattle Mariners manager Jason Kanzler can help fix Julio Rodríguez's declining outfield defense by applying coaching methods used with the Chicago Cubs. Rodríguez struggled significantly in center field during the 2026 season, recording -6 Defensive Runs Saved and -9 Outs Above Average, with reaction time ranking tied for ninth-worst among outfielders.
Rymer points to the defensive transformation of Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki under coach Quintin Berry as a potential model. While Kanzler previously served as the Cubs' director of player development, the writer believes similar pre-pitch and reaction training could address Rodríguez's outfield flaws.
