+37 OAA is best by any outfield in Statcast tracking era

The Tampa Bay Rays have built the most effective outfield at converting batted balls into outs in Statcast history. On non-home run balls hit in the air at least 220 feet during the 2026 season, Tampa Bay held opponents to a record-low .256 batting average. This defensive turnaround followed an offseason emphasis that addressed poor 2025 defensive metrics by hiring Corey Dickerson as an outfield instructor and bringing in Kevin Kiermaier as a camp coach.
Roster changes heavily contributed to the improvement, including the acquisition of veteran Cedric Mullins, the addition of Victor Mesa Jr., and the return of Jonny DeLuca from injury. Alongside Chandler Simpson, Tampa Bay's primary outfielders made dramatic strides in reaction times and jump metrics, providing crucial defensive support heading into their Division Series matchup against the New York Yankees.
