One of the biggest obstacles in running back Knicks championship team is avoiding the severe penalties that come with exceeding the NBA’s salary cap.

The New York Knicks have paused contract extension talks with stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart until the season begins to navigate the NBA's second apron limitations. Towns is eligible for a four-year deal up to $276 million, but the Knicks have offered roughly $200 million. Owner James Dolan has stated he will not exceed the second apron threshold, creating financial obstacles to keeping the roster intact.
Surpassing the second apron, which sits at around $221.6 million this season, carries severe penalties including losing the mid-level exception and having future first-round draft picks frozen. The Knicks are currently over the first apron alongside five other teams. Center Mitchell Robinson already departed for Boston, while tryout guard Bruce Brown voiced frustration over the new Collective Bargaining Agreement's impact on mid-tier salaries.
