A thank you note marked the end of Pat Connaughton’s tenure in North Carolina just a week short of his 12th NBA season. The Charlotte Hornets have officially trimmed their roster down to the league-mandated 15-player limit ahead of opening…

The Charlotte Hornets have waived veteran guard and 2021 NBA champion Pat Connaughton to meet the league's 15-player roster limit ahead of opening night. Connaughton held a non-guaranteed $3.8 million contract for the 2026–27 season. Executive vice president Jeff Peterson opted to release the 33-year-old in order to retain 21-year-old forward Tidjane Salaün as the franchise focuses on its younger core under head coach Charles Lee.
The roster decision comes as Charlotte prepares for their regular season opener against the Brooklyn Nets while managing multiple backcourt injuries. Starting point guard Coby White missed the entire preseason with a left calf strain, leaving his status questionable. Wing Kon Knueppel is also sidelined with a lingering hamstring injury, prompting the Hornets to rely on Christian Anderson Jr. and Dennis Schroder for additional backcourt depth.
