Mario Hezonja Defensive Role Request Highlights Shift in Cavaliers Win-First Mindset

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Mario Hezonja has requested that head coach Kenny Atkinson and assistant Mike Gerrity assign him to defend opposing teams' top scoring options. Following Cleveland's 117-112 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night, Hezonja explained that guarding premier scorers allows the Cavaliers to utilize a switch-heavy defensive scheme designed to wear down opponents over 48 minutes.

Hezonja spent several stretches defending Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 43 points, while Atkinson praised the forward's willingness to embrace physical matchups. After going scoreless in the first half, the former Real Madrid standout recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 26 minutes off the bench.
