Former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has claimed that General Manager Nico Harrison lied to team ownership to facilitate the controversial trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The blockbuster deal, which has been widely criticized, was pushed through against the wishes of Mavericks legend and front office executive Michael Finley, according to Cuban.
In a recent interview, Cuban detailed how Harrison allegedly misled owner Patrick Dumont to secure approval for the trade. He stated, “I talked to Patrick (Dumont) about it, you could just tell that Nico (Harrison) just (expletive) on Luka. Because some of the stuff that Patrick was telling me was not true. Yeah. And kudos to (Michael Finley) for really trying to stand up and block it.”
The move was driven by Harrison’s desire to build a team focused on defense, a vision that involved moving on from the franchise’s cornerstone player. Finley, the current Vice President of Basketball Operations and a key player for the Mavericks alongside Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash in the early 2000s, stood as one of the few voices in the front office supporting Doncic and opposing the deal.
The trade’s immediate aftermath was disastrous for Dallas. The acquisition of Anthony Davis failed to produce results, compounded by an injury to Kyrie Irving. This ultimately led to the Mavericks trading Davis, firing Harrison, and embarking on a new direction after securing the number one draft pick and selecting Cooper Flagg.
Finley’s support for Doncic came despite a previously viral moment where he was seen taking a beer away from the star during a celebration. It was later clarified this was at the request of the team’s media staff. Cuban’s comments suggest that had Finley held more authority than Harrison, Luka Doncic would likely still be in a Mavericks uniform.
