The Pistons tried putting John Collins at center but it didn’t work.

PistonPowered's Swoosh Shrestha argues that Detroit Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff saw an early experiment fail when using John Collins at center during the season opener against the Celtics. Despite Detroit pulling out a comeback win, Collins recorded a team-worst -13 plus-minus while struggling against Boston's 7-foot interior rotation of Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta.
The writer notes that Collins managed only six points on 3-of-7 shooting and failed to provide the offensive spacing intended to assist ball handlers like Ausar Thompson. Shrestha concludes that while small-ball looks could work in specific matchups, Detroit fared far better playing traditional bigs Jalen Duren and Paul Reed.
