New York Knicks owner James Dolan has drawn a hard line on spending, stating he will not cross the NBA’s punitive second luxury tax apron to re-sign key players from the 2026 championship roster. The decision puts the team’s future in immediate doubt.
The championship parade hasn’t even happened, but the Knicks front office is already facing a brutal financial reality. The core five of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart are secure. But the key role players who helped deliver the title are not. Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet, and Jordan Clarkson are all headed for unrestricted free agency, while Jose Alvarado holds a player option.
Keeping that championship-winning depth will be expensive. It would almost certainly push the Knicks’ payroll into the dreaded second apron, a line in the sand Dolan refuses to cross. Speaking on WFAN, the owner made his position clear, stating he wants to keep the team intact but has limits.
“First off, most of our guys are under contract,” Dolan said. He then delivered the ultimatum for his front office. “We have a couple guys who are not. If we could bring back the whole team exactly as it is, why wouldn’t you? But I don’t know if we’re going to be able to. Just contractually. The second apron triggers severe penalties beyond massive tax payments, heavily restricting a team’s ability to make trades or sign other free agents. It’s a financial straitjacket designed to curb spending by the league’s wealthiest teams. Dolan doubled down on his stance, leaving no room for interpretation.
