Austin Reaves has already gone from an undrafted rookie to one of the highest-paid players in Lakers history. Now comes the harder part. After securing the multi-year $184 million extension, Reaves enters a different phase of his career.
Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka stated that guard Austin Reaves must improve his leadership following a four-year, $184 million contract extension. Pelinka noted in an interview with Spectrum SportsNet that entering max-level status requires showing teammates how to improve by example, a message also reinforced by head coach JJ Redick.
Reaves declined a $14.9 million player option for 2026-27 to sign the multi-year deal after averaging 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game last season. Following the departure of LeBron James, Reaves is expected to take on elevated leadership responsibilities alongside Luka Doncic.
