The smooth baritone of Lawrence Tanter was irreplaceable. But after he had retired a few months before his passing, the Los Angeles Lakers were going to appoint the new PA announcer any day now.
The Los Angeles Lakers have officially named veteran sports broadcaster Derrin Horton as their new public address announcer for the 2026–27 NBA season. Horton replaces legendary announcer Lawrence Tanter, who retired following a stroke and passed away on September 23 after serving 43 seasons with the franchise. Horton is scheduled to make his PA debut on October 8 during a preseason game against the Sacramento Kings at Crypto.com Arena.
A seven-time Emmy Award winner with more than 35 years of broadcasting experience, Horton previously worked for KTLA, KCAL-TV, and NFL Network. He expressed deep admiration for Tanter, who famously recorded the wedding introduction for Horton and his wife Elise, stating his commitment to honoring Tanter's lasting legacy while bringing his own voice to the role.
