Tyrese Haliburton never intended to damage his relationship with Damian Lillard. Yet one celebration appears to have changed the dynamic. Almost three years later, the Indiana Pacers star is opening up about the incident, taking responsibility for his actions.
Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton expressed a desire to repair his relationship with Damian Lillard following years of tension that began with a celebration during the 2023 NBA In-Season Tournament. Speaking on The Zach Lowe Show, Haliburton admitted that mimicking Lillard's wrist-tap celebration created unnecessary friction between them, explaining that he was young, having fun in the moment, and hopes to hold a conversation to clear the air.
The strain between the two players escalated during the 2025 playoffs between Indiana and Milwaukee, where they engaged in verbal exchanges. However, mutual Achilles injuries subsequently sidelined both guards. Haliburton, who previously modeled his jersey number after Lillard and received mentorship from him early in his career, noted he hopes to reconcile when their teams face each other on December 17.
