Timberwolves Now Want Help Paying for New Arena; Will They Get It?

Minnesota Timberwolves CEO Matt Caldwell indicated the organization is seeking public assistance from local and state lawmakers to help fund a new arena. Speaking at the North Star Summit alongside Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Caldwell reaffirmed the franchise's commitment to building a new venue to replace Target Center. However, he did not guarantee that the facility would remain in downtown Minneapolis.

This marks a shift from earlier ownership plans under Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who initially pledged to finance an arena using only private funds. Following changes involving investor Marc Stad and team Governor Elisa Stad, the Timberwolves appear to be exploring broader location options while pursuing taxpayer support, despite historically strong resistance from municipal and state officials.
