The National Basketball Coaches Association has publicly condemned the Portland Trail Blazers’ contract for new head coach Micah Nori. NBCA President J.B. Bickerstaff called the one-year guaranteed deal a disrespectful move that devalues the coaching profession and sets a dangerous precedent.
The hiring of Nori, 52, as Portland’s new head coach has sparked a league-wide dispute. He landed his first top job after 28 years as an assistant, but the contract—one guaranteed year with team options—has drawn a sharp rebuke. Bickerstaff acknowledged the personal achievement for Nori, who was recently the lead assistant for a Minnesota Timberwolves team deep in the playoffs.
“I understand his story and his journey to get to the spot where he was able to get this opportunity, and I don’t want to take away from what should be a special moment for him, for his family, and a job that’s well deserved and earned,” Bickerstaff said.
However, he argued the team-friendly structure exploits a first-time coach’s dream. “From our perspective, it’s like someone’s taking advantage of your dream and devaluing what we feel like coaches have earned over the years.” He elaborated on the perceived disrespect from Portland’s new ownership. “You think about the sacrifice, the time, the growth that coaches have helped and done with the NBA, and then for someone to come in and attempt to devalue the work that coaches have in this league is extremely disappointing.”
The deal, with a reported sub-market salary, breaks from the multi-year security typically required to establish a long-term culture, especially for a rebuilding team. Bickerstaff labeled the move an attack on established industry standards. “Coaching salaries have been increasing because the league understands and owners understand the value of quality coaching. So for a new guy to come in who doesn’t have that understanding and to go out and chop at the knees of coaches is a slap in the face to our value.”
While Timberwolves coach Chris Finch called it a personal business decision, Bickerstaff’s public criticism establishes a clear line. The NBCA fears the contract could create a new, lower-tier market for first-time head coaches, undercutting the financial and professional security the union has worked to build. Both the Trail Blazers and Nori’s agent have declined to comment.
