The Knicks not only have to decide how much they're willing to pay Towns, but also how they're going to structure his contract.

The New York Knicks face an October 19 deadline to negotiate an extension with Karl-Anthony Towns under optimal salary cap conditions. Towns is eligible for a four-year contract worth up to $276 million, but negotiations remain far apart as New York attempts to secure a more team-friendly deal to preserve long-term financial flexibility.
Esfandiar Baraheni highlights that extending Towns before the regular season begins allows him to pick up his $61 million player option for 2027-28. This frontloading structure would enable the Knicks to reduce his salary in 2028-29, when Jalen Brunson is projected to begin a major contract extension.
