The Knicks opened the 2026-27 season raising a championship banner, but the evening was ultimately spoiled by the rival 76ers.
Following a 106-100 opening-night loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks captain Jalen Brunson said getting knocked off the mountain serves as a good humbling experience to check the team's egos. The Knicks celebrated their first NBA title in 53 years by raising a championship banner at Madison Square Garden before falling to Philadelphia, whose lineup included LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
Brunson shot 6-of-19 from the field to finish with 21 points, while New York committed 15 turnovers that led to 22 Philadelphia points. Knicks head coach Mike Brown noted his team looked like they were running in mud after halftime, and Josh Hart called for soul-searching as New York prepared to face the Boston Celtics on Friday.
