The Denver Nuggets are reportedly exploring a roster shakeup, but a blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown is facing major pushback. The proposed deal would swap Jamal Murray for Brown, but it fails to fix Denverโs biggest weakness and could shatter their offensive identity.
The alarm bells are ringing loud and clear. Analyst Adam Mares slammed the potential fit, pointing to a fatal flaw in the plan. โDenver has really struggled with ball handling this year. Jaylen Brown. Heโs a worse ball handler than Jamal Murray is.โ This isn’t a small problem. It’s the whole problem. Murray’s elite pick-and-roll chemistry with Nikola Jokiฤ is the engine of the Nuggets’ offense. Brown is a scoring wing, not a floor general, and his assist-to-turnover ratio reflects that.
Swapping the two doesn’t solve Denver’s need for more playmakers. It just changes the name on the jersey. Mares was blunt about the issue. โYou still donโt solve the biggest problem you have, which is just more initiators, more creators. You swap one for another one.โ While the front office might be chasing a vibe shift after a disappointing playoff exit, the on-court logic is shaky at best.
Even the idea of a culture refresh is being questioned. โDenver does need something of a cultural reset, I think, a little bit of enthusiasm and excitement. I donโt know if Jaylen Brown is the guy for that. Itโs possible. So, to me, Iโm not in love with the rumored deals.โ With team president Josh Kroenke stating everyone but Jokiฤ is available, the pressure is on. Yet, with tight salary constraints and little leverage, finding a path to actually improve is proving difficult. Mares remains unconvinced a magic bullet exists. โI just am not that optimistic that thereโs like a magic bullet move. If Denverโs trying to shed salary, I just donโt see a way where theyโre meaningfully better. Maybe theyโre the same, but I donโt see meaningfully better.โ
